For the Christian, Scripture speaks of two “selves”: the old and the new — the carnal and the essential — the fallen and the resurrected.
The former is a ghost that lingers but is no longer necessary for true Life; it was crucified with Christ.
The latter is the radiant “self” of grace — the one Paul describes as “the life I now live” in this world.
This is our best and truest self, raised with Christ and indwelt by Him.
This self takes up the cross daily — not to die again, but to live surrendered.
It bows low before the throne of God, listens for the whisper of the Spirit,
and then rises gratefully to do His will with joyful love.
To be mindful of this self is not selfishness —
it is faithfulness.
It is attending to the only life we have been given to live —
the life of Christ in us, the hope of glory.
