When most people hear the word prophecy, they imagine someone foretelling the future — a prediction about what’s going to happen next. And yes, that’s part of it. But it’s not the whole story.
At its heart, prophecy is not about impressing others with foresight. It’s about expressing God’s heart in real time. Sometimes that includes a glimpse of tomorrow. But often, it’s a word for today, or even yesterday.
God Challenges the False Gods
Through the prophet Isaiah, God once issued a challenge to the idols of the nations:
“Bring in your idols to tell us what is going to happen. Tell us what the former things were, so we may consider them and know their final outcome. Or declare to us the things to come, tell us what the future holds, so we may know that you are gods. Do something, whether good or bad, so that we will be dismayed and filled with fear. But you are less than nothing, and your works are utterly worthless.” — Isaiah 41:22–24
In other words, only the living God can reveal the past, present, and future with accuracy and authority. Fulfilled prophecy is one of His signatures, His proof that He alone holds history in His hands.
Forthtelling as Well as Foretelling
But if we stop at prediction, we miss the richness of prophecy. The Hebrew prophets often spoke words for their own generation: words of warning, encouragement, or correction. Moses received revelations about the past (creation itself). Jesus spoke prophetically about His own time, exposing hypocrisy and announcing the kingdom at hand.
Prophecy is not limited to one time zone. It is the unveiling of God’s mind and heart—whether about what was, what is, or what is to come.
When God speaks through His people, He is not showing off trivia about the future. He is inviting us into alignment with His truth and love right now.
Prophetic Ministry Today
When I use the word prophetic, I mean more than the gift of prophecy in 1 Corinthians 12. I’m including dreams, visions, words of knowledge, words of wisdom—any supernatural communication initiated by God through the Spirit.
The common thread is not fortune-telling. It is divine inspiration. It is God speaking to and through human beings because He loves to communicate with His children.
And here’s the deepest truth: the gospel itself is the most prophetic message the world has ever known. For centuries the prophets foretold it. Then Jesus fulfilled it. And today, the message of Christ crucified and risen still breaks into hearts with supernatural power: “the power of God unto salvation for everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16). If you want to really get into a flow of prophetic ministry, share the good news of Jesus from your heart and life experience out of love for the person or people in front of you.
Why This Matters
If we reduce prophecy to predicting the future, we make it a parlor trick. But when we understand it as God unveiling His heart—whether about yesterday, today, or tomorrow—it becomes a lifeline of encouragement, conviction, and direction.
Prophecy reminds us: God is not silent. He is not distant. He is still speaking. And His words, however they come, always pull us closer to Jesus.
The Invitation
Ask God to speak—not just about what’s coming, but about what He wants to say to you and your community today. Ask Him to give you words that heal, strengthen, and encourage. And measure everything by Scripture, the ultimate prophetic word.
Because prophecy is not just about what’s ahead. It’s about hearing the living God, right now.
✝️ Prayer: Lord, thank You for being the God who speaks. Keep me from chasing speculative predictions, and tune my heart to Your voice in the present moment. Use me to convey to others words that strengthen, comfort, and align others with You. Amen.
