Today we celebrate Martin Luther King Day in honor of the man who had a dream. I took a look at an excerpt of this famous man’s speech that is one of the most quoted ever in our history. Here is his dream:
“I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.’
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
I have a dream today.”
As I read this everything in me says, MLK, I share your dream!
I’ve been sharing with you that the word the Lord gave me for this year is Love Will Find a Way.
Today I ask you Lord that love would find a way for this dream to become a reality!
- I ask that You would cause the hearts of many people to choose the ways of Martin Luther King, Jr., his non-violent stand for civil rights. He himself suffered violence but did not stoop to becoming a violent man himself. Let his mantle of peaceful resistance be on the people of our land. Let love find a way to end violence!
- I ask you Lord that you would show us our part to make sure that all children, all people, black or white will join hands as sisters and brothers.
- I ask you Jesus that we the people of the nation of the United States of America would live out the true meaning of our national creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”
- I pray that men and women everywhere would turn to You, Jesus! We love because You have first loved us. I pray that many people would find the faith that empowered this man to be a part of seeing that dream of equality come to pass.
I honor you today Martin Luther King, Jr. – I share your dream and commit to doing my part to see it come to fruition.
God bless you today my black brothers and sisters. I am so thankful for you!
